Hi,

thank you for your valuable feedback. Basically we do support limiting of printing, etc when encrypting with a 40 or 128 Bit symetric key.

When encrypting with a certificate we do not support it as you know. The reason is that certificate encryption is being used to make sure that when a document leaks to a wrong person that person cannot use it. It does NOT protect against print outs etc.

There are several reasons for that. Once a person has a valid certificate he can ALWAYS decrypt the document (otherwise Adobe would not be able to display the document) and change the flag which limits printing etc. So with disallowing printing we would give the user a wrong security feeling. In fact even if we would limit the printing someone would not have the know how to change the printing flag he could still make screenshots and print them.

It looks that you are looking for a Digital Rights Management solution. Such a solution can only be secure if every time the document is being opened the opening software would do an online check to "see" if it should open the document or not.

I have been trialing Aloaha PDF Crypter for the past couple of weeks and very disapointed to find that it does not support limited printing and it actually misses out the original security options set within the PDF.

The completely misses the point of encrypting the PDF in the first place, here is the scenario.

The PDF is a high security risk document containing login details and passwords etc. It is encrypted with a key so only your 3rd party contractors can have access to it. Your 3rd party contractor starts to become expensive so you go elsewhere. Your ex 3rd party contractor prints your document to a PDF writer (Aloaha PDF Printer for example) and submits it to a website. Your document is no longer encrypted and secure!!!!!

Aloaha does not support that. The reason is that it does not make since since those limitations are just properties in the document. If someone uses a non standard PDF Viewer it could be that that Reader does not respect the values and just prints.
